Beauty Myths: Fact or Fiction? Beauty & Food

You are what you eat!

Chocolate makes you break out.
FICTION!
This must be the oldest myth in the book. Chocolate won’t make you break out.  Recently a study even showed that pure chocolate is even healthier than fruit at times. But of course too much of anything is bad for you.

Cucumber can get rid of dark circles.
Somewhere in Between!
The cold of cucumber helps to reduce puffiness, but not cucumber itself.  Cucumber stays cold for quite some time once out of the refrigerator because it contains a lot of water and that’s why cucumber is often used and not, let’s say pine-apple. You could also use slices of potato or put two spoons in the refrigerator for a while and put them on your dark circles. There are also special gel eye masks out there that you can cool in the refrigerator or heat with warm water.

Water is good for the skin.
FICTION!
Drinking lots of water will only result in a lot of bathroom visits. It is proven by multiple studies that drinking water doesn’t do anything for your skin. And when you think about it, it’s pretty obvious since oils (sebum) keep the skin hydrated and not water. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is important to keep yourself hydrated in general. Too much of anything is bad for you, both so is too little of some things.

Some food can improve cellulite.
FACT!
Though cellulite is partially genetic, some food can smoothen out your bumpy thighs a bit.
The trick is eating foods that strengthen blood vessels, collagen and elastin fibers. Which foods are that you ask? Well, goji berries (contain trace minerals, beta carotene and antioxidants), eggs and soy (full of cell-repairing lecithin) and walnuts, coldwater fish and olive oil (rich in Omega 3s and other essential fatty acids).

Eating carrots can give you a tan.
FICTION!
If you eat a lot, and I mean a LOT, of carrots you will turn orange. That is because carrots contain carotene. But it certainly won’t give you a natural-looking tan on it's own without the sun.
